GSC Game World Launches Fundraiser for Chornobyl Demining Efforts
In a commendable move to support humanitarian efforts amidst conflict, GSC Game World, the studio behind Stalker 2, initiated a fundraising campaign in partnership with the Ukrainian charity, United24. The goal was to raise $100,000, which would assist in the removal of dangerous mines and explosive devices from the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, a site that has become synonymous with the devastating 1986 nuclear disaster.
The realities of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone starkly contrast with its portrayal in the gaming world. Established to ensure public safety, the area has now become one of the most hazardous regions, littered with remnants of war and the aftermath of the nuclear incident. Following the temporary occupation by Russian forces during the early phases of the Ukraine invasion, significant hazards were left behind. Reports indicated that at least eight people had suffered injuries or fatalities due to explosions in the zone, underscoring the urgency of clearing these risks for the safety of returning workers and researchers.
Ihor Bezkaravainyi from Ukraine’s Ministry of Economy and Environment emphasized the importance of this cleanup, which not only protects scientists and energy workers but also ensures safe routes for emergency responders dealing with potential fires. This humanitarian project aimed to create a safer environment in an area deeply entwined with Ukrainian identity and culture—a sentiment echoed by GSC Game World, which described Chornobyl as a “vital piece of the Ukrainian cultural code.”
In a bid to encourage public participation, donations of at least $10 would earn contributors exclusive rewards, including merchandise such as patches, t-shirts, and keys for Stalker 2: Heart of Chornobyl Ultimate Edition. Enthusiasts would also have the chance to obtain unique “Artifact keychains” made from the remnants of a downed Russian Mi-8 helicopter, offering a tangible connection to the ongoing struggles faced by the region.
Previously, GSC Game World’s collaboration with United24 had successfully raised over $120,000 for the “Bring Light Back” campaign, aimed at providing essential generators to schools adversely affected by power outages due to the war. As the diabolical effects of conflict continue to weigh heavily on Ukraine, the initiative to demine the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone highlights the studio’s commitment to transforming virtual fear into real-world safety.
