Why Midnight Club’s Legacy Came to an End: Insights from a Former Developer
In the years following the last release of Midnight Club, the absence of new games in this beloved street racing franchise became a topic of curiosity among fans. The last installment, Midnight Club: Los Angeles, launched in 2008 to critical acclaim, yet it was evident that the series faced challenges that led to its decline. It turned out that internal conflicts and shifting priorities within the development teams significantly impacted the fate of the franchise.
Former Rockstar designer Kris Roberts, who contributed to several Midnight Club titles and other notable projects like Red Dead Redemption, divulged details about the series’ cancellation in a recent interview. He indicated that various factors influenced the discontinuation, including development difficulties and timing issues. Particularly, Roberts pointed out a “non-trivial conflict” between the studios in New York and San Diego, which created friction during the development process. However, the overarching issue remained that Grand Theft Auto overshadowed the Midnight Club series in every respect, leading to persistent treatment as a secondary project.
Roberts noted that despite the team’s high quality work, the perception from the New York studio was that they were not receiving the recognition they deserved. According to him, the sentiment could be summarized as, “You’re not GTA,” which underscored the entrenched hierarchy within Rockstar. This situation placed the Midnight Club developers in a tough spot, feeling the weight of being regarded as lesser by their peers.
As Roberts departed in 2010, the San Diego studio was reportedly still working on a new Midnight Club title. Sadly, plans for this project were eventually scrapped. The announcement of Grand Theft Auto IV around the same time firmly indicated that Rockstar’s future investments would primarily focus on that flagship franchise, further diminishing any hope for Midnight Club enthusiasts.
The closure of Midnight Club aligns with Take-Two Interactive’s strategic direction under Rockstar. Their business model clearly favored major commercial successes, as stated by CEO Strauss Zelnick. In an industry driven by blockbuster titles, a merely good game could often be insufficient for survival.
