Poll finds 100% of Japanese online game developers are using AI, though mostly for user preference analysis and user behavior prediction

Japanese Game Developers Fully Embrace AI Technology Amidst Controversy

In recent times, the gaming industry witnessed a significant trend regarding the use of artificial intelligence, particularly highlighted by a recent survey conducted by Japan’s Online Game Association (JOGA) alongside Kadokawa ASCII Laboratories. This study revealed that all surveyed Japanese online game developers had incorporated generative AI in their projects in various capacities.

Interestingly, many of these studios opted to leverage AI for tasks like analyzing user preferences and predicting player behavior instead of more artistic endeavors like music or voice acting. This distinction adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing dialogue surrounding AI’s role in game development, as some applications appear less contentious in nature. However, concerns still linger regarding the broader implications of such adoption.

Despite the seemingly benign nature of these applications, skepticism remains prevalent within the industry. As voices of dissent grow louder, even well-respected companies such as Larian Studios have found themselves navigating backlash from fans over their own experiments with AI technology. This sentiment seems to echo a growing sentiment among developers, with more than half of them expressing negative views toward generative AI, marking a stark increase from just two years prior. Many developers allegedly felt a strong aversion toward integrating AI into their work, with some stating they’d prefer to exit the industry altogether if such technologies became standard practice.

Moreover, players expressed fears that the increased use of AI might lead to a homogenization of game design, diminishing the diversity and uniqueness that has traditionally characterized video games. This concern aligns with a broader wariness surrounding the potential for AI-generated content to become pervasive within the gaming sphere, fueling a debate over the balance between technological advancement and artistic integrity.

The survey also indicated notable usage rates for AI technologies, with Google Gemini dominating the landscape at a usage rate of 94%. Followed by Claude and GitHub Copilot at 84% and 76%, respectively, this demonstrates a heavy reliance on AI tools among developers.

As game consumers grapple with these developments, the future landscape of gaming appears increasingly intertwined with artificial intelligence. Though the immediate applications may seem innocuous, the implications of such widespread adoption warrant closer scrutiny.
