Helldivers 2 borrows from Dead Space and Silent Hill for its horrific new aliens

New Enemies and Updates Spice Up Helldivers 2 Gameplay

In a recent update, Helldivers 2 introduced new threats, expanding the range of enemies that players faced in the battlefield. Although fans eagerly anticipated the arrival of the Cultist unit among the new Illuminate foes, they instead encountered the formidable crusher and wretch characters, both bringing unique challenges to the gameplay.

The update, dubbed “Devoid of Liberty,” came as a charge for players who found themselves battling against a newly formed void in Illuminate space, which demanded strategic combat and a fresh approach to combat situations. The crusher, a hulking brute wielding a hefty club, relied on brute strength rather than strategy. Players quickly learned that while it was possible to evade them, their substantial health pool made them a looming threat that needed eventual attention. Successfully removing their helmet revealed a weak point, making timing crucial for taking these behemoths down.

The wretches, conversely, played a different role on the battlefield. Agile and swift, these new enemies aimed to outmaneuver players rather than face them head-on. With their small stature, they proved to be tricky foes, often positioning themselves to launch surprise attacks from unexpected angles. While they could easily be dispatched with a well-aimed shot, they could overwhelm players when appearing in groups, making shotguns a recommended choice for efficiently managing their numbers.

The addition of these enemies was a thoughtful enhancement for the Illuminate faction, providing necessary variety; however, players noted that this upgrade fell short of their expectations regarding scale. Many hoped for additional game features or new biomes, as the update primarily focused on these enemies instead of introducing a significant technological advancement or a new setting. In contrast to past updates that unveiled new content and expansive campaigns, “Devoid of Liberty” felt more like an incremental improvement rather than a substantial expansion.

Despite the lack of expansions or major updates, players found enjoyment in the refined gameplay mechanics. Enhancements to reload systems and the raising of level caps contributed positively to the overall experience. Such improvements indicated that Helldivers 2 remained dedicated to refining and expanding gameplay quality, even if the latest update did not match the scale of memorable campaigns seen in previous installments.
