Hideo Kojima made a notable return to the horror genre with his project, codenamed “OD.” While many aspects of the game were already revealed, including its collaboration with acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele, the true essence of OD remained somewhat elusive. The game features a cast that includes Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schafer, and a posthumous appearance by Udo Kier. Kojima indicated that initial trailers might suggest a conventional horror game, but he insisted that this perception was misleading.
The story behind OD dates back to Kojima’s earlier work on “Death Stranding.” He expressed a desire to create something wholly unique and different, and he had long been developing the concept in isolation. Specifically mentioning that this game would introduce players to an unprecedented gaming system, Kojima conveyed an eagerness to push boundaries beyond what other horror titles had achieved in terms of fear.
Despite Kojima’s track record, he encountered skepticism from various industry executives when pitching OD. Many dismissed his vision as “crazy” and believed they could not execute the ambitious concept. However, Phil Spencer, the former head of Xbox, showed enthusiasm for the project, eager to secure an exclusive collaboration after Kojima’s extensive history with PlayStation. Although several Metal Gear Solid titles had not launched on Xbox, interest remained high, especially given that both “Death Stranding” and its sequel had initially been PlayStation exclusives.
Following Spencer, Asha Sharma, the current head of Xbox, supported OD and described it as “deeply moving.” She emphasized that the game reflected a new direction for Xbox and highlighted the need for the platform to be an inclusive space for creative developers, allowing for the emergence of the next great talent in gaming.
Kojima also discussed the psychological aspect of horror in OD, stating that he wanted to elevate the game’s scare factor. Yet he acknowledged that some players might struggle with overly frightening experiences. To address this, he envisioned incorporating a system that could help gamers continue playing despite intense moments of fear, though he refrained from revealing further specifics to avoid spoiling the game.
As of now, OD still awaits an official release date.
