Intel Faces Challenges as PC Chip Demand Dwindled Amid Memory Crisis
On a recent earnings call, Intel’s CEO Tan highlighted that the ongoing memory crisis severely impacted the company’s ability to sell its Panther Lake processor chips. Reasons behind this include the rising prices of memory and storage, forcing consumers and businesses to make fewer purchases. As a result, the company acknowledged a tougher road ahead for the PC market, with expectations of challenging times over the next few quarters.
Rather than holding onto the excess Panther Lake chips that could not find buyers, Intel considered reallocating its 18A production capacity towards more profitable data center chips. CFO David Zinsner confirmed this strategy, stating that some of the production resources aimed at Panther Lake would be diverted to create more wafers for data centers. This decision was part of a broader response to the decreased demand for consumer chips amid the ongoing economic difficulties.
Amid these shifts, the production ramp-up of Panther Lake on the 18A node proved successful. However, Intel observed a higher demand for its budget-friendly Wildcat Lake processors, which saw a notable growth rate of approximately 70% sequentially. This trend illustrated that consumers were leaning more towards affordable chip options during the challenging economic climate.
The struggles with chip supplies extended beyond just the production capacity at Intel’s facilities. Zinsner indicated that they were also facing challenges concerning substrate availability, complicating the overall supply chain. With forecasts suggesting that the gaming chip demand could decline significantly in 2027 due to inventory cutbacks, Intel shared concerns about potential continuing difficulties within the sector, hinting that these supply issues might persist for several years.
Reflecting on these compelling dynamics, the company’s share price fell by 23% in after-hours trading following the earnings call. This drop served as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles Intel faced amidst a shifting marketplace, where consumer demand played a critical role.
