New Safety Dongle from Super Flower Protects High-Wattage Graphics Cards
In response to increasing incidents of damage to high-powered graphics cards, Super Flower introduced an innovative accessory aimed at safeguarding these expensive components. The VGA 12+4 pin OCP Dongle was designed to connect between a graphics card and its power supply, providing real-time monitoring of current loads to prevent overheating and potential failures.
Reports had emerged of Nvidia graphics cards suffering catastrophic damages due to overcurrent issues, leading to concerns among gamers and PC builders. The dongle handles the 12V-2×6 (12VHPWR) power connector, which can support up to 600 watts—more than sufficient for the latest graphics cards like the RTX 5090. The device actively monitors the current across the connector’s pins, ensuring that no single pin exceeds the recommended limits, which, if reached, could result in hazards.
Each of the six main pins found in the connector is designed to carry a load of approximately 8.33 amps. However, due to variance in resistance, some pins experience higher current loads than others, which can lead to overheating. The OCP Dongle monitors these loads closely, illuminating different signals when thresholds are crossed. If any pin exceeds 9.5 amps, the dongle lights up orange and emits a buzzing sound; if it surpasses 12 amps, it lights up red, and if this condition persists for over three minutes, it activates a safety feature known as VGA Black Screen Protection, temporarily disabling the graphics card to prevent permanent damage.
This safety feature isn’t entirely new; other existing products, such as Cooler Master’s GPU Shield Adapter, operate on similar principles of monitoring and warning users of potential risks. While this new dongle might not be readily available globally, its initial release is in Taiwan, included with certain power supplies.
The focus on maintaining the integrity and performance of high-wattage graphics setups is more critical than ever, as manufacturers continue to push the limits of what’s possible in gaming technology. Gamers are left grappling with the reality that even premium components come with risks that must be managed effectively.
